Growing Maidenhair fern

The first thing that you need to understand is that the maidenhair fern plant thrives in full shaded areas or even in partially shaded areas. It will not grow properly when placed in areas where it is exposed to direct sunlight for hours. The fern needs moist soil to thrive and the soil must also be a well-draining one. They will grow at their best when placed in well lit areas, where they can catch the early morning sun and not the direct sunlight. Their growth will be enhanced when they are placed in a warmer area than in a cooler area. The plant needs humidity to grow well.

Steps to Follow

  • Placing the Plant

If you are growing it indoors, then place the maidenhair fern pot on the north or the east windowsill. They will grow well in areas where there is moderate light. You can also grow the maidenhair ferns indoors by placing them in areas where they get indirect sunlight.

  • Moisture and Humidity

The plant needs moist soil to grow well. You should ensure that the soil is moist at all times. Make sure that the soil does not dry out completely before watering the plant. It would be ideal to grow the fern in a location where the temperature is above 50ºF or 10ºC. The fern needs high humidity to grow well. You can use a humidifier in the room where the fern plant is kept. You can spray warm water over the fern leaves every morning. Place them next to a fountain, aquarium or even in bathrooms. The plant will love to grow in small containers when placing it indoors. It does not like re-potting. You need to set your plant on water filled pebble tray and mist the plant daily to try and maintain the high humidity levels. The best option is growing maidenhair fern in the bathroom where it will benefit from the steam from the shower, this will provide enough humidity for the plant.

Care for Maidenhair Ferns

The maidenhair ferns do not demand regular and continuous care. You should be careful not to over water the plant, yet keep it moist at all times. Watering more than the required quantity may lead to stem or root rot. You should water it freely during summers and keep it moist during winters. Make sure that the soil is loose and rich. You can feed it with a water based liquid fertiliser, dilute to half strength or any organic fertiliser once in two weeks during the growing season. If the soil of the plant dries out, you can give it a good soaking for a few days and you will see the fresh fern leaves to eventually show up. Remember they do not like frosts!
