Well, Sprekelia is an attractive looking plant that you can grow in your garden that will add beauty to your garden. These plants are generally grown as annuals and have a blooming period from the end of the spring to the onset of summer. They grow as annuals in the garden and reach a height of 15 cm to 30 cm. Sperkelia is commonly referred to as Aztec lily, Mexican Fire Lily, Jacobean Lily and Aztec Lily.

Overview of Aztec Lily

Sprekelia is grown normally in places where there is a warm climate and can be grown in pots in regions where there is a cold climate. They are half hardy bulbs that reach a maximum of 12 inches in height and sometimes might bloom twice a year. There are even times when the bulbs do not bloom in a year, even when it is a full grown bulb. Normally in a group of 12 to 15 bulbs, only two to four plants bloom in a year. The flower of the Aztec lily is red in colour and looks like a lily. The best time to bury the bulbs is during autumn.

In warmer areas or after the frost in the cooler regions. It can be grown in the soil or as potted plants.

How to Grow Jacobean Lilies?

  • If you are planning to grow the plant outside, then you need to make use of the half hardy bulbs of Jacobean lilies or Aztec lilies.
  • Plant the bulbs in a moderately fertilised soil at a depth of 10 to 15 cm. It is ideal to plant the bulb after two to two and a half weeks of the last frost of the spring season or spring the autumn season in warmer areas.
  • The bulbs have to be spaced at least 20 to 30 cm away from each other. It is ideal to grow them in partially shaded locations or in sunny areas where there is good drainage of water.
  • If you have plans to grow the lily indoors, then you will have to grow it from the seed. The seeds have to be covered lightly and made to germinate at 18ºC to 22ºC.
  • You should grow the plants indoors for about two years and then you can shift the plant outdoors after the end of the frost period.
  • The seed will take at least 7 years to produce Aztec lily flowers on them.

Caring the Aztec Lilies

The Sprekelia plant has to be watered regularly and make sure that the soil is always moist. I fertilise the soil with compost tea at least once in two weeks during its growing period to keep the plant healthy. In the dormant stage, the lilies like the soil to be dry. Too much watering will make the bulbs rot. In colder regions, the plants must be lifted during late autumn and stored in a frost free location during winter. Once the plants get established, they will start to multiply every year. Sprekelia plants are resistant to plant diseases and pests. When you plant the sprekelia bulb make sure that the long neck of the bulb is planted out of the ground.
